again. The XTC Bumper Book of
Fun for Boys and Girls is a
256-page edition of Limelight,
featuring the original copies
published between 1982 and 1992
plus new material for 2017,
including interviews with Andy
Partridge, Colin Moulding, Dave
Gregory and Terry Chambers.
Put together by founding editor Mark Fisher,
The XTC Bumper Book of Fun for Boys and Girls

Limelight was a fanzine created for and by the
fans of Swindon's finest. In those far-off
pre-internet days, it was one of the few ways
people could keep up to date with what XTC were
up to.
Like its Canadian sister fanzine, The Little
Express, Limelight featured news, interviews and
articles about all things XTC. Every edition
sold out and original copies have become
collectors' items.
Like the band, the contents were varied,
surprising and fun. There were articles about
Victorian architecture, discussions about the
band's artwork, illustrations by Andy Partridge
and interviews with fellow musicians.
It was great. And now it's back – with even more

"I grew up in the same street as Andy
Partridge and being close friends, music was
always going to play a big part in my life.
I started working as a mobile DJ, and
eventually found myself a residency at a
venue called the Brunel Rooms in Swindon.
Tuesdays was our rock night with local bands
playing a set each week. One of these bands
became popular over a number of appearances
and they were called the Helium Kidz. When
their original roadie was unable to continue
driving, the band asked me to step in. That
is how this documented journey started. As
well as music, photography was and still is
one of my passions and I often developed
black & white pictures in my makeshift
kitchen dark room. I started taking pictures
of the members of XTC as they progressed
from a local band to a chart topping
international live act.
From 1976 to 1980 I toured with XTC all over
the UK and around the world as their sound
engineer and driver/roadie. My unrestricted
backstage access enabled me to take many
candid, previously unreleased pictures.
These pictures have been in my home for over
35 years and I feel now is the time to share
them with you, the fortunate people who have
managed to acquire a copy of this very
limited photo book.
This book is strictly limited to 100 copies
and once they are gone they are gone. This
book will not be published again in this

The book has the measures of a cd and it
finds place comfortably close to those
of the Xtc in the precious container.
Anecdotes, lapels and photo (some
already present in the volume devoted to
the Xtc of Vittorio Azzoni) that they
cross the career of the XTC making of
this volume a valid "manual of survival"
of rapid and easy consultation. For
the numerous narrated episodes and the
interview released in the April of 1999
it almost seems to make a long talk with
same Andy Partridge. Almost brought
completely the whole discography and the
collaborations.
The enclosure cd
picks up six recorded songs in 1972 when
still Star Park were called.
Partridge on guitar and vocals, Moulding
on bass, Terry Chambers on drums and
Dave Cartner on vocals are still distant
from 'White Music' and influenced by the
music of the time in stroke, to
exception of 'Neon Shuffle' that has
already the sonorities of the first XTC.
Partridge: "We put the things that were
in our collection of albums at that time".

"manuale di sopravvivenza" di rapida e
facile consultazione. Per i numerosi
episodi narrati e l'intervista
rilasciata nell'Aprile del 1999, sembra
quasi di fare una lunga chiacchierata
con Andy Partridge stesso. Riportata
quasi completamente tutta la discografia
e le collaborazioni.
L'allegato cd raccoglie sei brani
registrati nel 1972 quando ancora si
chiamavano "Star Park". Partridge
chitarra e voce, Moulding al basso,
Terry Chambers alla batteria e Dave
Cartner alla voce sono ancora lontani da
White Music e risentono delle influenze
musicali del tempo, eccezion fatta per
'Neon Shuffle' che ha gia' lo stampo
sonoro dei primi XTC. Partridge: "Ci
mettevamo le cose che stavano nella
nostra collezione di dischi di allora".

XTC alle
regole del gioco sonoro rispondono con
traiettorie ellittiche, tendendo al
limite (e solo al limite) verso di esse,
con una manovra di avvicinamento che
ricorda da vicino quella degli Scritti
Politti. La differenza, comunque, è
chiara: là il rollio, lo swing è
pacato, incernierato da certi
do ut des di cui anche le piccole
produzioni (Rough trade, anche tu?) sono
capaci. Per i quattro divini estatici,
viceversa, lo swing è prepotente,
la conoscenza delle sette+cinque note
perfetta, l'aggressività (specie nei
primi lavori) eclatante. Non
stupisca il fatto di vedere gli XTC in
classifica. E non vada fatto risalire ai
pettegolezzi che vorrebbero il gruppo
come il preferito dai figli della ricca
borghesia inglese. Il fatto,
incontestabile, è che XTC è una macchina
distribuisci-suoni certamente tra le più
perfezionate in commercio. Making
Plans for Nigel, Runaways, Jason o
Living Through Another Cuba sono già
nel breviario di qualsiasi seminarista
strumentista rock, perfette, non
migliorabili. La loro estasi
continua, fa sognare i sogni più puri e
incorrotti, quelli dove lo stupore è
generato dalla continua sostituzione di
idee musicali, dove l'ascolto di un
nuovo disco lascia sgomenti, attoniti,
ad ascoltare qualcosa che tutti
avrebbero potuto comporre ma che nessuno
avrebbe mai potuto pensare. I loro
suoni, il loro
savoir faire, la loro rapidità
cerebrale li fanno trasgressivi,
nell'era del grande sonno. Avvicinarsi
ai grossi mercati discografici dal di
fuori li mette in quella situazione,
così spiacevole, di non-professionisti
della canzonetta. La musica, come
l'attività spirituale dipinta da Adorno,
è diventata nel frattempo, mentre
parlavamo, «un'azienda con rigida
divisione del lavoro, branche e
numerus clausus. Chi è materialmente
indipendente e la sceglie perché rifugge
dall'onta del guadagno, non sarà incline
a riconoscere questo fatto. E per ciò
sarà punito: non è un professional:
è considerato nella gerarchia dei
concorrenti, come un dilettante ... e se
vuole fare carriera deve battere, in
ostinazione e chiusura mentale, anche lo
specialista più
borné.» L'intelligenza XTC,
comunque, non si sa come, riesce a
penetrare nei cuori di molta gente, a
scuoterla dalla narcosi che una corte
dei miracoli di cantanti disco
spagnoli, oranghi italiani e scimpanzè
americani li ha ridotti. Non è
necessario addurre prove, come la
sofisticata costruzione
armonico-ritmico-melodica, la naiveté
dell'approccio strumentale propria solo
dei «veri» musicisti, l'arguzia rapida e
mai dedita al ripasso dei testi,
l'esplosione creativa che accompagna
ogni realizzazione. Basta ascoltarli: e
suoneranno diversi. Dopo dieci volte il
sogno si trasformerà in ipnosi, dopo
venti ascolti giungerà la catalessi, al
terzo giorno di continuo ascolto
resusciterete, e andrete predicando
l'amore e la fede anche nel suono
spigliato, leggermente dissonante,
squisito.
A questo punto non sarete aiutati da
nessuno; soli, catapultati beyond the
universe, dove Bowman e Keir Dullea
non si sono mai spinti, dove il suono è
pulsazione, la musica non entra nelle
orecchie ma scorre nel sangue, mutante,
indispensabile. «Lentamente strinse
a se Leia e, insieme con Threepio e
Artoo, si misero a fissare intensamente
i cieli, ognuno di loro pensando alla
stessa stella scarlatta.»
Degli XTC
non vorremmo dire nulla, per non
sembrare troppo entusiastici. Eppure i
quattro di Swindon anche sotto il
profilo testi danno prova di genialità.
I quadretti di White Music
(Science Friction, ad esempio)
sono di una linearità spaventosa,
raccontano quello che vogliono con una
sintesi e scintille di metafore
godibilissime. E anche andando avanti
colla produzione, dove i testi si
allungano e dilatano, i risultati sono
impareggiabili. Si va da
tutta-la-guerra-fredda-minuto-per-minuto
ai proclami antimilitaristi a metaforici
Giasoni (Giasone! Ma chi mai lo
tirerebbe fuori in una canzone pop?) a
scene di vita aristocratica inglese. Per
arrivare ai «sensi che fanno lo
straordinario», al surrealismo
avvicinato dall'esaltazione infinita
dell'imperialismo. Solo in questi
territori esistono torpedoni che
slittano su ghiaccio nero o mondi a
forma di biscotto. Troppo assurdi gli
XTC per non piacere. Troppo semplici per
